2010 by the numbers

While many all are full up from Christmas lunch and nursing headaches from New Year’s Eve celebrations, the BigPond Sport team figured it timely to have a look at the season that was in 2010.

A range of achievements, successes and failures underlined the 26-race story of last season but perhaps the best way we can analyse the situation is by the numbers …

  • There were a total of 11 different drivers that won races in 2010. Of those, three – Steve Owen, Paul Dumbrell and Jonathon Webb – were first-time winners. It’s the highest number of different race winners in the championship since 2001 when 11 different drivers won races.
  • Jamie Whincup was again the Pole Position Award winner with 10 pole positions from the 26 available last season. The next best were Mark Winterbottom and Garth Tander with five each.
  • Three drivers celebrated their 150th championship event start in 2010 – Steven Johnson, Jason Bright and Jason Bargwanna.
  • While James Courtney did indeed finish every race in the championship, reports post-Sydney of him being the only one to do so were incorrect given that Jonathon Webb completed all 26 races as well. And Webb went even better than the champion, finishing every single lap of every championship race – phenomenal!
  • Speaking of Webb, his 21st grid position in Sydney was the lowest starting spot for a race winner in championship history. The previous ‘best/worst’ was 20th when Jamie Whincup won from there in Race 1 at Winton in 2007.
  • Craig Lowndes was the ‘endurance’ champion by being the top point-scoring driver across the three endurance events at Phillip Island, Bathurst and the Gold Coast.
  • James Courtney became just the 22nd driver to be crowned Australian Touring Car Champion/V8 Supercar Champion with his championship victory.
  • Dick Johnson Racing won its seventh ATCC/V8SCS crown, making it the most successful team in the history of the championship. The Holden Racing Team sits second with six championships to its credit.
  • Seven drivers scored their first V8 Supercar podium finish. Shane van Gisbergen kicked things off in Abu Dhabi and would be followed during the season by Andrew Jones, Steve Owen, John McIntyre, Andy Priaulx, Paul Dumbrell and Jonathon Webb.
