2011 In Review: Todd Kelly

TODD Kelly was undoubtedly one of the busiest drivers in the field last season - juggling the responsibilities of driving the #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Commodore with running Kelly Racing's four-car squad with brother Rick, and joining the newly-created V8 Supercars Commission.

THE elder Kelly brother added two trophies to the Kelly Racing cabinet last season, but more often than not he found himself fighting well outside of the top ten.

Spurred on by a lack of solid results, Kelly told BigPond Sport that work is well underway into building the team into a consistent race winning outfit this season.

Championship Position: 18th

Best Result: 3rd (Hamilton, Sandown)

Best Qualifying: 2nd (Hamilton)

What is your highlight of this season?

Having the two Jack Daniel’s cars on the front row of the grid in Hamilton the day after finishing first and third.

What is your funniest moment from this season?

When Rick took out PD (Paul Dumbrell) at Winton.

What are you getting up to during the off-season break?

We'll head up to the farm in Mildura as usual, but we'll spend a lot more time in Melbourne this off-season because we've got all the Car of the Future jigs which are well underway, and we'll start to build our first chassis.

What was the race that got away from you this year?

Bathurst is always the worst race to have a bad day at. During the race we made a change and actually had a really good race car but we sheered the drive pegs off the rear and spent a lot of time in the pits. That's the biggest disappointment- we could have had a good result there.

2012 Goal?

To get back towards the pointy end. We're starting to come together as a team now and our engineering side of things is getting stronger and stronger. With the research and development we've got planned over the break and at the Sandown test in February, I'm confident we'll be the best prepared we've been since we started the team.

2011 Rating out of 10?

3. It wasn't a good year- most of the races in the middle of the season were pretty average and I think I had about 5 DNFs. How the season ended was nowhere near what I would have liked.
