THE start of the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship is just five weeks away but this year, preparations for Car of the Future have been added to teams' regular pre-season workload.
This is the last season before the Car of the Future platform is fully implemented in 2013 - ensuring a busy workload for teams in the year ahead.
"All teams have been sent the final technical drawings in order to commence building the cars," V8 Supercars Operations Manager Damien White told BigPond Sport.
"Teams now have seven months before the first official Car of the Future test day, which will be held at Queensland Raceway in the week after the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 in August, track availability permitting."
Two tyre test days were conducted at Phillip Island and Winton Raceway in November before the project took a hiatus over the christmas break. Further testing will resume shortly, with multiple soft tyre options one of the areas to be evaluated.
The Car of the Future features an independent rear suspension, a rear-mounted transaxle, mid-mounted fuel tank and control rollcage, in addition to a new 18-inch wheel and tyre package.
The Holden and Ford prototypes were successfully launched to the public at the Sydney Telstra 500 in December, but will not participate in the official test day at Sandown Raceway on February 11.
The 2012 V8 Supercar Championship kicks off at Adelaide's Clipsal 500 from March 1- 4.
