After several events spent fighting in the mid-pack for little result, Fujitsu Racing’s Michael Caruso returned to his season-opening form at the recent Winton 300.
The Garry Rogers Motorsport driver, who celebrates his 28th birthday today, recorded his best qualifying result so far this season (5th for Race 11) and his first top-10 race finish since the opening event at Abu Dhabi.
Now in his fourth full season with the GRM squad, Caruso sits 14th in the Championship, and BigPond Sport spoke with him on the eve of his birthday.
BIGPOND: How will you be celebrating your birthday?
MC: "I have no idea, I’ll probably try and play some golf. An ideal birthday for me would be to start the day with scrambled eggs on toast, then a nice round of eighteen on a good golf course, followed by playing with my new puppy."
"He’s a toy poodle called Hercules, which is obviously not a name that suits him just yet!"
BIGPOND: What is the best birthday present you ever received?
MC: "One of the most memorable presents I got was a go-kart for my 12th birthday from my parents. It was a Parilla with a Yamaha motor, and it had red side pods … so of course I put a big Ferrari sticker on it and thought I was a bit of a legend!"
"I used to race it at the Combined Districts Kart Club near Lithgow and that’s basically where it all started."

BIGPOND: What do you think (team owner) Garry Rogers would get you for your birthday?
MC: "Well, Garry never remembers my birthday, so I won’t be holding my breath waiting for a cake! A win at Winton would have been a great birthday present, for me and the GRM team. We were close to a podium but the car didn’t have the speed or tyre life that it had in the first race so I was happy to bring it home in 6th."
Michael will be back behind the wheel of the #34 Fujitsu Racing Commodore for the SKYCITY Triple Crown at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin from June 17-19.
He won his first race at the Hidden Valley circuit in 2009, but only managed 17th and 15th place finishes there last year.
