Prodrive boss David Richards has warned V8 Supercars Australia not to change its winning formula too much.

V8 Supercars Australia is in the process of developing the much-mooted Car of the Future rules, which will allow manufacturers other than the traditional Ford and Holden to take part in the Series.

Talking in V8X Magazine Richards says, “One of the great things about this Championship that makes it so iconic is you do have these two distinct sides and I think that sets a wonderful, simplistic standard in the world of motorsport.

“To introduce a third brand, I question what the long-term outcome might be.”

Richards – who is the head of Prodrive, the majority shareholder of Ford Performance Racing – is also not convinced with V8 Supercars Australia’s push into foreign markets.

“You try and take something from one environment where it really works into another environment where it doesn’t and you risk losing your bedrock of support,” he told V8X.
