Toll Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander has continued his form from yesterday’s race and grabbed pole for today’s (Sunday) race at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.

Tander managed to stay off the kerbs at turn two and set a time fast enough to beat his rivals.

Ford Performance Racing’s Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom and Jim Beam Racing’s James Courtney had their fastest times erased after crossing the yellow line at turn two with all four wheels of their cars.

However, Winterbottom’s second-fastest time was still good enough for third, while Courtney slid to ninth.

TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup will start today’s 250-kilometre race from the outside of the front row after claiming the second-fastest legal time of the 20-minute session.

Tander said he is confident of a good result in today’s race.

“I thought the track was coming to us yesterday in the race and we made a change to the car for qualifying this morning and it responded really well,” he said.

“Traditionally our cars are always better here on Sunday than the Saturday.

“I think the weather is coming as well which will make it interesting.

“I’m really happy to get that pole and continue our form from yesterday.

“One race win is nice and a pole is nice, but we need to make sure that we have a solid run today to back it up.”

Tander said he felt for Winterbottom and Courtney and described their penalty as a “tough call”.

“There is millimetres in it and you want to attack at turn one but you are mindful of what is coming at turn two,” he said.

“It’s hard for those guys who had their times taken off them because there was only millimetres in it.

“The reward isn’t worth the risk. We sacrificed a bit of time at turn two to make sure that was legal all through the session.”

Whincup believes he will still be able to get a good start from the outside of the front row.

“We would have liked to have had pole, but GT obviously did a good lap with a good car, so we are second and we’ll just work on our car for the race and keep our fingers crossed,” he said.

The TeamVodafone Commodore driver also crossed the yellow line at turn two with all four wheels of his Commodore, but said it was clearly a driving error and he wasn’t trying to get a fast lap, so he wasn’t penalised.

“I made a mistake going in and I knew it straight away and just backed out of it, so as per the rules which were told to us all in the drivers’ briefing, that is fine,” he explained.

Frosty was pleased that his fastest ‘legal’ lap was still good enough for third place.

“You don’t know if you are a millimetre inside the kerb or out, but it got reported and you deal with the penalty… luckily I did another lap that put us on the second row; 78 laps is a long way and at least we are still up the front,” he said.

Courtney was also looking to bounce back in the race.

“It is disappointing, but we have had nothing but disappointment this weekend except in yesterday’s race, and it is a long race today so we will see how we end up,” he said.

The second leg of the Clipsal 500 is scheduled to start at 2:35pm.
