Lowndes' Day Of Reckoning

TWO things will happen at Sydney Olympic Park today.

Either Jamie Whincup will clinch this third V8 Supercars Championship or Craig Lowndes will force his teammate to take the title right down to the wire in tomorrow’s 28th and final race of the season.

Just which of the two scenarios plays out today at the Sydney Telstra 500 is one of the big questions being asked ahead of today’s 74-lap race after the duo set the fastest times in opening practice yesterday.

But while the championship is on the line, there are a multitude of other story lines and questions left to answer.

Who will claim third place in the championship – Mark Winterbottom, Shane van Gisbergen, Garth Tander or Will Davison?

Who will claim bragging rights as top Ford finisher – Orrcon Steel FPR’s Winterbottom or SP Tools/Stone Brothers’ van Gisbergen?

Can Lee Holdsworth keep his streak of four consecutive front row starts in Sydney alive and leave Fujitsu Racing/GRM on a high after six years?

Will the Sydney street circuit again prove to be a car breaker?

How much of an effect will the weather and predicted showers have on the race?

Will another ‘roughie’ get up, just as Jonathon Webb did here last year to take his first-ever V8 Supercars win 12 months ago?

Can Penrith-born and bred James Courtney end his championship reign on a high on home soil?

Can Paul Dumbrell round out his full-time V8 Supercar driving career on the podium?

Those questions – and a whole pile more – will be answered both today and tomorrow with a pair of 250-kilometre races to round of the V8 Supercars Championship.

The weather forecast today is for a possible morning shower, partly cloudy and a maximum of 21 degrees.

Qualifying today will be at 10.20am with the Top 10 Shootout following at 11.25am (all times local AEDT).

Race 27 – the penultimate event of the V8 Supercars Championship – will kick off at 3.05pm.
