THE Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit will be totally resurfaced in December this year – for the first time since 1998.

The 4.445-kilometre venue, which will host the V8 Supercars Championship on May 18-20 this year, has had the all clear given for works totaling $3 million.

In addition to its regular V8 Supercars Championship event, the circuit is also massively popular with motorcycle fans with the MotoGP and World Superbike Championship both racing at the ‘Island.

In recent years some bumps have appeared in some high speed braking areas, prompting the first new surface to be laid in over a decade.

Linfox, the circuit’s owner, has committed capital funds for the resurfacing with work to commence on December 3 and continue right through to Christmas.

Surveying technology used to resurface the Mugello and Imola circuits in Italy will be utilised at Phillip Island, with the work performed by Victorian contractors as well as Phillip Island Operations in-house resources.

There will be no significant change to the shape of the track.

The first event after the resurfacing will be the 2013 International Island Classic from January 25-27, followed by an intensive February schedule of testing for MotoGP and World Superbike.
