V8 Supercar hero Greg Murphy has helped launch a fundraising plan to purchase a newer generation Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance in New Zealand.

The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance is the official charity of the ITM400 in Hamilton, which will raise funds towards the new helicopter through a community fun run with a gold coin donation and collections over the race weekend on April 15-17.

Martin Whitaker, Chief Executive Officer of V8 Supercars, says the partnership between New Zealand’s biggest sporting event, the ITM400 Hamilton, and the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance is all about giving back to the region in a way that benefits so many people.

“We are really looking forward to contributing positively towards this hugely valuable service for the people of Waikato,” he said.

“Our fundraising initiatives for the appeal include a community fun run with gold coin donation, onsite collectors at the event and a driver sausage sizzle.”

The current Bell222B helicopter was purchased in the mid-1990s and is well recognised in the air by the familiar sounding whoop-whoop of its rotor blades and by its famous Westpac paint scheme.

It is a machine that has served the Waikato community exceptionally well by assisting in the safe transportation of many thousands of patients around the region.

The new-look, new format and highly anticipated 2011 ITM400 Hamilton V8 Supercars Championship street race will see rock legends ZZ Top and pop punk superstars Good Charlotte perform live following daily racing.

In addition to three-day tickets, single day race tickets (concerts not included) have now been launched with prices ranging from NZ$28 for a Friday race pass through to NZ$73 for a Saturday or Sunday race pass.
