V8 SUPERCARS Champion Jamie Whincup will begin his title defence after the toughest week of his life.

The TeamVodafone ace’s father David passed away on Sunday after a short battle with cancer.

The three-time champion will dedicate his efforts this weekend to his father, who provided his son with long-term support from his karting days through to Formula Ford and V8 Supercars.

“Last week was without a doubt the toughest week of my life,” said Whincup.

“Dad rode the motorsport wave with me every step of the way, which I plan to still be the case right into the future.

“It has been an incredibly hard week for my family and I and I thank everyone for their support so far. Dad will never be forgotten.

“He will be my inspiration as I concentrate on the start of my title defence at Clipsal this weekend.”

David Whincup will be farewelled at a service in Melbourne next week.

BigPond Sport and V8 Supercars extends its sympathies to Jamie, his mother Sandra, sister Sally and the extended Whincup family.
