Karl Reindler recorded the best and worst results of his V8 Supercar career at the weekend's Armor All Gold Coast 600.
Teamed with Italian touring car icon Fabrizio Giovanardi, Reindler scored Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing's first top 10 finish with ninth place on Saturday, before Giovanardi was taken out of the race on Sunday without Reindler having had the chance to complete a lap.
Saturday's 300km race had seen Giovanardi avoid the opening lap carnage from 23rd on the grid, and put in a solid 40 lap stint before handing over to Reindler.
The West Australian was one of many to return to the pitlane for fuel under Safety Car just 16 laps later, before a third stop, on Lap 81, ensured Reindler had enough fuel to run flat out until the end.
The Fair Dinkum Sheds Commodore moved progressively up the order over the final 20 laps as several rivals crashed, pitted for more fuel, or found themselves penalised for driving infringements.
"Our first top 10 finish is a great milestone for the team, and made up for missing out on a similar result at Bathurst two weeks ago," said Reindler.
"It was hard work out there. The car had taken a couple of hits in the opening stint, and it was difficult to get a handle on it when I jumped in.
"But everyone did their job really well - Fabrizio took care of business over the first 40 laps, the strategy from the crew was great, and we were rewarded for that in the end."
After the car struggled for grip in Sunday morning qualifying, Giovanardi lined up 27th for the second 300km test.
Disaster struck towards the end of the Italian's stint however, when Jacques Villeneuve made heavy contact with the back of the Fair Dinkum Sheds Commodore at the Turn 4 hairpin - causing race ending damage to the car's differential.
"It was unfortunate what happened, but that's the way it goes sometimes," said Reindler.
"We saw a lot of incidents over the weekend, and Fabrizio did a fantastic job to avoid all of it on Saturday, but sometimes there's nothing you can do about it.
"Overall it was an exciting weekend of racing for the fans, and a great experience having the international drivers involved.
"Saturday's result gives us good confidence heading into the rest of the year, and I'm really looking forward to getting back onto the (softer compound) Sprint tyre at Symmons Plains."
Giovanardi also enjoyed the weekend, despite the disappointing end on Sunday.
"I have really enjoyed driving with team this weekend," he said.
"I'm very unhappy that it ended the way it did - I was in the middle of the hairpin and Villeneueve just smacked us.
"I try with all my force to stay out of the trouble and the trouble found me."
The V8 Supercar Championship Series continue from November 12-14 at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania.
