TeamVodafone Team Principle Roland Dane has described 2010 as a brilliant year for the team even though it fell just short of securing its third straight Championship.
“It hasn’t been a brilliant weekend but it’s been a brilliant year… can’t win them all,” he said at last weekend’s Sydney Telstra 500.
The team that switched manufacturers in the off season and yet 2009 Champion Jamie Whincup won the first four races of the year in the Middle East and five more throughout the year plus scored a massive 10 pole positions.
“I know when we peel that number one off and stick the 88 back on it’s going to hurt a little bit,” Whincup lamented.
Craig Lowndes finished the Championship in fourth and he and enduro driver Mark Skaife took out both the L&H 500 and the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
Although TeamVodafone missed securing the 2010 drivers title by a mere 65 points, it picked up five awards at the 2010 Gala Awards on Monday night.
The team was awarded Best Presented Team, Champion Team of the Year, Pole Position Award and Bathurst Champions Award.
“Unfortunately we weren’t quite good enough to win the Drivers Championship again but we can still look back on what we’ve done this year and be very proud,” Dane said.
“We’ve had more race wins this year than any other team, dominated the endurance races, and achieved a Bathurst 1-2 for the first time in 26 years and for the third time in history.
“It’s great to be acknowledged for our performance both on and off the track. To win both the Best Presented Team and Champion Team of the year is a great honour and we hope we can do it again next year.”
The Sydney Telstra 500 was also the team’s 100th event start in the V8 Supercar Championship Series.
