BARBAGALLO Raceway will have a new look when the V8 Supercars Championship visits for the Tradingpost Perth Challenge on May 4-6.

The event will be the christening of the first stage of upgrades to the circuit, which most notably include the new infield pit lane complete with new, full-size garages to suit all categories, a wider and safer pit lane, new corporate facilities, new media centre and an over-pass bridge to allow public access to the paddock.

Reigning Bathurst champion Garth Tander, fellow Western Australian drivers Dean Fiore and Karl Reindler, and Tradingpost Racing’s Will Davison were on hand today for the official launch of the event – which will host Races 7, 8, and 9 of the 2012 championship.

Tander said the upgrades were desperately needed.

“There are few people more proud that the Government has begun these improvements than myself, Karl and Dean who started our careers here,” Tander said.

“Barbagallo Raceway has been in desperate need of these upgraded facilities for many years, not just for the one time each year V8 Supercars come to town but for everyone who uses the circuit year-round.

“It will ultimately enable Perth to become a first class venue for all forms of motorsport and potentially attract more categories to the West. There is also flexibility to further expand the track and the rest of the facilities over time.”

The Tradingpost Perth Challenge will feature a strong line-up of supports, including the V8 Supercars Development Series, Australian Superbike Championship, Porsche City Index Carrera Cup and Auto One V8 Utes.

Last year the V8 Supercar race wins were shared between Jamie Whincup and Team BOC’s Jason Bright, who scored Brad Jones Racing’s first V8 Supercars Championship race win and his first since November 2006 in Bahrain.
