The 2007 V8 Supercar Champion returns for his fifth straight season with the Holden Racing Team after finishing fifth in last year’s V8 Supercars Championship.

Having won the 1997 Australian Formula Ford Championship, Tander amazingly was forced to the sidelines a year later without any budget to continue his career, instead playing mechanic on another driver’s car.

But when Steven Richards left Garry Rogers Motorsport early in 1998, Tander found himself in a V8 drive and he quickly became one of the fast young guns.

After learning the ropes, he pieced together a brilliant 2000, winning Bathurst and finishing runner-up in the championship.

There were three more lean years with GRM before Tander switched to the HSV Dealer Team in 2005. The team hit its straps in 2006 however the now infamous ‘driver swaps’ between Toll HSV and HRT worked against Tander in the endurance events and he was left waiting to challenge for the crown again.

His time came in 2007, four round wins (the last of which came in the ultimately important Phillip Island Grand Finale), helping Tander finally become Champion before moving to the works Holden Racing Team for 2008.

The only Holden driver to win a solo driver round in 2008, Tander again was a championship challenger in 2009. Six race wins – including the endurance double with new teammate Will Davison at Phillip Island and Bathurst – helped propel ‘GT’ to third in the championship.

He again performed well in 2010, despite the factory Holden team struggling, and still finished fifth in the championship, a result he repeated in 2011 when he clinched his third Bathurst crown.

Tander this year enters his 15th season as a full-time driver in the V8 Supercars Championship.
