A karting champion as a youngster, Michael Caruso initially followed the path of open wheeler motor racing before the move into V8 Supercars.
Part of the Ford KartStars program which assisting in his move to Formula Ford in a largely unsuccessful 2001 season, Caruso moved into the Australian Formula 3 Championship, winning the national crown in 2003.
After testing for international Formula 3000, Caruso instead joined the Holden Young Lions outfit in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series in 2004 for a handful of races. His racing career stalled for a few seasons before bouncing back into the V8 development series with a Falcon in 2006, winning the Privateer’s Cup and last year he spearheaded Ford Rising Stars Racing’s assault on the development category.
Caruso won three rounds and finished a narrow second to Tony D’Alberto in the title chase in addition to scoring endurance duties for WPS Racing, before landing the job to replace Dean Canto at Garry Rogers Motorsport for the 2008 V8 Supercars Championship.
His first full season in the ‘main game’ proved to be successful with two top 10 finishes in his rookie year but last year was even better. The Sydney-born speedster took his first race win at
Hidden Valley and finished on the podium at Bathurst with his good mate Lee Holdsworth in addition to narrowly missing a top 10 finish in the championship.
In 2010 he scored a podium finish at Hamilton and again finished the championship right on the cusp of the top 10, before slipping back slightly and finishing 14th in last year’s pointscore.
He lines up in 2012 for his fifth straight season with Garry Rogers’ team, with a new teammate for the first time in his history with the team in the wake of the departure of Lee Holdsworth.
