ANDREW Thompson has sealed the deal and become the 2011 Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series champion in Sydney.
The Monster Commodore driver, who has dominated this season after a disastrous year in the V8 Supercars Championship last year with Walkinshaw Racing, took pole position (his fifth of 2011) and then took an all-the-way victory in the 17-lap race over Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert to seal the crown.
The victory was his 11th race win of the season and gives him an unassailable lead over David Russell and Jack Perkins with one race to come tomorrow.
Russell and Perkins finished fourth and fifth in today’s race, leaving the former with a 53-point advantage over the latter with one race to go.
Tim Blanchard was sixth from Paul Morris (who was again in the action and tapped Taz Douglas into a spin at turn 12), Andrew Jones was eighth from Drew Russell and Scott McLaughlin.
The Fujitsu Falcon driver had to start from the back of the grid after crashing in qualifying and causing a red flag, which meant he lost his fastest time and was benched for the rest of the session.
The race was only a few hundred metres old before it came under the Safety Car when Marcus Zukanovic and Rodney Jane made heavy contact with the concrete barriers on the run to the turn 2 chicane.
Both drivers emerged OK but their cars were heavily damaged.
Race 2 – the final race of the season for the Fujitsu Series – will be held tomorrow at 12.55pm AEDT – it will be telecast in the Sydney Telstra 500 telecast on the Seven Network.
