Fans Go All Out to Camp at Circuit

One of the famed campsites is the ‘Bathurst Hilton’, which has over the years expanded to a marquee with 23 campers this year, a Honeymoon Suite, and a Penthouse for the ladies. What started as two campsites now covers six.
Fans from Perth, Queensland and Brisbane have made the trip – and the set-up looks so good passers-by want to know if there’s any extra room in there!
Something new is added annually – last year a red carpet to recognise 50 years of racing at Mount Panorama, when 42 people stayed at the Hilton. This year it’s an illuminated sign out the front, advertising the Bathurst Hilton.
One of the campers, Gregory Gay, 40, has come to the event every year since 2004 and has been involved with the Hilton crew since ’10. He comes early in the week and helps ‘bling out’ the set-up with Dale Sudholz.
He follows Craig Lowndes, and while he started as a Ford supporter, now follows the Champion regardless of manufacturer. His tip for the weekend was a Red Bull Racing Australia win, though couldn’t predict which of the two cars.
“The lead-up for me is to enjoy the whole race week – seeing the truck parade… getting build up, that sense of occasion, to come early, help set up,” he said.
Passers-by will stop and take photos on the red carpet, Gay said, and believes the Bathurst Hilton is known to other fans.
He drives out from Sydney each year and walks to many different vantage points to watch the racing over the weekend.
The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is the race that keeps people coming back – tickets are still available for the weekend, and with the circuit just over a two-hour drive from Sydney, why not head out for Sunday and see the action in the flesh?
