Motorsport journalists have rated Marcos Ambrose as the best ever V8 Supercar driver.
As part of V8X magazine’s 10-year celebrations, the journalists were polled on who they thought were the 10 greatest V8 Supercar drivers, excluding the previous Group A category.
Marcos Ambrose, who won back to back V8 championships and now races NASCAR in the United States, came out on top ahead of the likes of Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, who each have multiple Bathurst wins and as many or more championships.
A round win in his first V8 season, getting pole at Bathurst in his rookie year and steely determination are listed as reasons why Ambrose is the best of the best.
Ambrose’s V8 Supercar stats are certainly impressive: he has 28 race wins to his name along with 18 pole positions and won the Barry Sheene Medal – the category’s best and fairest award – in his Championship winning years of 2003 and 2004.
The ‘Devil Racer’ left V8 Supercars at the end of the 2005 season to embark on a NASCAR career, where he has had limited success.
His first win in the Nationwide category, which is the rough equivalent of V8 Supercars’ Fujitsu Series, was at Watkins Glen in 2008 and he finished on the podium there in the Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR’s main game, last year.
Ambrose won the Nationwide race at Watkins Glen again in 2009 and this year and was on pole for the race at Montreal last weekend but his car had electrical dramas and he DNFed.
When Ambrose announced he had split from his current team JTG Daugherty Racing last month there was plenty of speculation that he would return to V8 Supercars in 2011 but he has since signed on to drive for NASCAR’s Richard Petty Motorsport.
